Art Classes for Students 10-14

Several Spots Open for Student Art Classes

Last summer I had one art student, Alex and you may remember my posts about Alex.
This year, Alex is returning and I'm opening up some room for 3 more students ages 10-14.

This was Alex last year in her first class after she made her own color wheel,
and began a painting of some flowers.

The classes begin Monday June 24 from 10 a.m. until noon.
There will be classes on 4 consecutive Mondays and it will be $100 for all 4 classes,
 payable in advance.
I'm asking parents to assess their children with these questions:

1.  Can my child commit to 4 Mondays in a row because there will be no make up classes.
2. Does my child have an interest in painting
3.  Does my child have an attention span that will hold up to 2 hours of varying instruction and practical work.
If you have a child in the Carroll County, KY., area I'll be having these classes in my home and would love to talk to you about this opportunity for your child.

I supply paint, brushes, easels, and supports to paint on.
Most of the surfaces we paint on are either matboard or masonite boards.
The last class we will be using a canvas panel for our painting.

Your child will need a cover up such as a shirt or apron.  I don't supply them.

I'll take pictures all along the way and your child will be featured on my blog and my facebook page.

During every class we learn an art principle such as learning too look at things and seeing many aspects of that object or scene and then go into the studio and paint it.

Here, we spent some time in my yard looking at trees and colors and shadows.
Then we painted trees.

We painted plein air one day and Alex painted my railroad tie garden with echinaceas, yarrow, marigolds and verbena.

Isn't she cute and doesn't she look like she just conquered the world?

We learned about blending color and getting some perspective,
so here we painted a seascape with lots of sky and clouds.

This was a fun painting we did from a cupcake I painted at a Dreama Tolle Perry workshop.

You can see in this painting Alex was learning about the shadows.
See that shadow under the icing and one of the cupcake on the table.

I don't want my students to mimic what I paint,
I want them to learn principles and then implement them.

So parents, think this over and get back to me if you think your child would love this and benefit from this instruction.

you can contact me at
slgraves6@gmail.com
502-523-0663 (calls only, I don't text)
or message me on facebook.

This is a fun class and the one thing I think kids get from this is they begin to see things differently.
They start to see real colors, depth of things and many details they might not notice otherwise.
Also painting is a great way to communicate and express things they may not be able to get out any other way.

If you have questions I haven't answered, please contact me.

Getting Ready for Camp Ernst Middle School

New Walls -  New Show

This Saturday I'm heading to Camp Ernst Middle School
for a one day art and craft show.

It's from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
6515 Camp Ernst Rd.
Burlington, KY  41005

Hope to see some of you there.

My husband Jim built me some new display walls and I set them up in the basement to see how they would work and how things would look.

So what do you think?

These 2 walls have barn and landscape paintings on them.

This wall has my hand painted home decor on it.
This is the first time I've been able to display it so well.
I'm pretty excited about it.

Except for the cupcake,
this wall has paintings with water on it.

Jim made four walls for me and they come apart and I can carry them
and put them together by myself.

I downloaded plans off the internet and Jim made them.
It didn't go exactly as the plans said, but he made it work.
They are beautiful.

Here is the finished and framed newest painting using a new technique.

Artist of the Month Display at Gallery 104, LaGrange, KY

If you didn't make it out,
here's a little peek at what I displayed.

Thanks Gallery 104 for giving me the honor of artist of the month.
I sure appreciate a reason to throw a party.

Sold 2 paintings on the wall, the smallest framed painting on the wall and the one top left.

Also sold one out of the basket on the left, plus lots of note cards.

These were the display shelves in the show room.
I sold two of these also.

Summer Scent,
I gave this painting away and Heather Toombs was the winner.

I took some of my garden stones and sold 2 or 3 of them.

This was a display of my entries in the KY state fair and a basket of 8 x 10 and 5 x 7 unframed paintings.

I forgot to take pics of the food, which was delish, thanks to my daughter Kari, the chef.

I also gave the painting on the right away and one of our missionaries, Elder Lowe won this.
He was so tickled.

I think everyone had a good time.

I did and I thank everyone for coming.
We had a great crowd of friends and family
and sometimes I can't who is what.

If you went, please post what you liked the best.

Thanks

Alex and her Cupcake

Alex and Her Cupcake

Today Alex worked on a painting of a cupcake.
I did this same painting when I took a class fro Dreama Tolle Perry in Carmel, IN
this past February.
I thought Alex might enjoy painting this.

She did.

This is her finished product.
Didn't she do a great job?
Leave a comment and I'll show her next week during her lesson.

Learning Curves Ahead

First Attempt
This was the first painting we did at the Dreama Tolle Perry Workshop.
It's hard learning to loosen yourself up,
but it was a lot of fun learning.

These two paintings are from day two.
The red awning one is the one we were supposed to do
and the green one I did because it reminded me of my flower shop
in Augusta, KY.
Thought my kids would get a kick out of it.

This is my musical easels painting.
We each got our own paintings started,
then when the music quit
we moved to another easel to work on someone elses painting
and someone moved to our easel to work on ours.
We only had a few minutes to work on each painting
so it really freed you up to see what needed to be done,
and do it.

This was my free style painting.
We were each supposed to bring some photos to work on in our free time.
I took the photo for this painting at Stream Cliff Herb Farm several years ago.
This is a 6 x 6 and I'm going to keep working on it in different sizes until I'm really happy with it.
Again, I wasn't too happy with it until I got the pathway pretty chunky and added a different color to the sky.
Neither of which took more than a few minutes to do.
Amazing what a few strokes can do!
None of these are for sale.
But,
as I get better,
there will be some at a future time.

Dreama little dream

Dreama Tolle Perry Workshop
Carmel, IN
February 27-29, 2012

Learned so much and had so much fun.
Met some incredibly talented women.
Loved the Renaissance Gallery
and the town of Carmel, IN is fabulous.

These are the paintings from the first day.
Mine is still too tight, but it was so fun learning how another person paints
and trying to go there.
Don't know if I ever will,
but the journey is so fun.

These were our paintings the second day.
I did two that day.
The second one has a green awning and I painted it to look like my flower shop I owned in Augusta, KY.
Petal Pusher Flowers

These are our musical easels paintings.
This was a really fun exercise where we started our own paintings,
but then 8-10 people actually painted and finished the paintings.
That was the funnest exercise I've ever done.
They are all beautiful paintings even though they had many authors.

I'll post my own paintings later.
I tweaked them once I got home and caught my breath.
I really like them all.
