Day Two Another View of THE Building

My small gallery on Main St.,

(maybe I should have named it that)

is an intriguing building.

This balcony is reminiscent of the French Quarter

and there is nothing else like it in Carrollton.

That makes it very noticeable.

The building is old and the years of use show more in some areas than others.

There is a narrow steep staircase leading to my private studio 

just beyond these doors. 

When I'm up there painting, I can almost channel the spirits of artists 100 years ago who might have lived in a similar space with a small place to cook and a little day bed to sleep.

Sort of sums it all up.

Landscape, Start to Finish

What is your process on a painting?

Here was our process for a landscape.

OK, it's really hot and humid here and I can't go outside for a long period of time.

But, we did go out and look at things to paint,

sketched things to paint,

and photographed what we would paint.

This was our final selection.

and my granddaughter, America is the blond.

We're back in the studio and beginning to sketch in our paintings.

We're working on 6" x 6" canvas panels.

We're making some headway.

We won't get all the elements of our original sketch in today,

but we learned a lot in the process.

following directions and using them in her own way.

Day 10 Butler Lake

Day 10 in the 30 in 30 challenge.

This fall I spent a week in General Butler State Park painting plein air and today I took my 10" x 8" and turned it into this 20" x 16" acrylic on a canvas panel.

It's a beautiful lake and I've gotten some great photos of it, but this is painted from what I think is my favorite painting from that week.

I haven't painted big in a while and this was fun, though daunting.

but in Utah where my son's family lives, this is the norm.

That's how they tell directions.

Visitors in the Park

These three cuties stopped by with their grandpa in General Butler State Park as I was finishing up for the day.  

They are Caroline, Jacob and Ryan and they are from Crestwood, KY.

They came to the park to play tennis and stopped to ask some questions and look at my work.

It was so fun to have someone stop by and ask about what I was doing.

This is what I was looking at as I began painting this morning. 

Got the trunk and branches and some highlights in.

Looks kind of scary at this point.

I put in the leaves that were blowing all over the park today and had gathered beneath the tree.  Then I began to put in the shadows under the tree and made one pass of the pine boughs.

The with just a slight turn, I had this beauty of a tree to look at.

I started here and then the fun began.

again scary trunk and branches.

Then for the highlights and shadows and it begins to look more like a tree.

This is the bottom of the tree.  

I need to go back to the studio and put the benches in.

Caroline, Jacob and Ryan to see.

Plein Air Painting at Christy's Candles

This is a plein air painting I did today at Christy's Candles in Madison, IN.

It's the shop.

I stood out in the yard and painted this.  

It's now behind the desk at the shop.  

This was lots of fun.

I moved closer to the house to find something else to paint.

I spied this bicycle covered over in ivy.

Yep, that's a painting screaming to be painted.

Here's the finished piece.

You can't see the painting very well , but you can see the bike in the ivy again.

Now to come up with a name.

Any suggestions?

Monday I posted a plein air painting I did at Point Park in Carrollton.

After I finished that painting I turned my easel 90 degrees to the left and I was looking at the Prestonville bridge.

Yep, it's that blue.  

Kentucky Blue.

So you know I had to paint that too.

Here's the view.  

As I said Monday,

I can have a painting in focus or I can have the painting in focus.

It's a 5" x 7" acrylic on a Raymar panel.

Lots of fun.  

I know I want to paint both these paintings in a bigger format.
